Elk River Tire & Auto

If you don’t have a powerful car battery sitting in your electricity-dependent automobile, your car becomes a large curb-hogging paperweight. The car battery, which produces a voltage to the electrical components of the vehicle, is basically a lead-acid electrochemical storage compartment that acts as an electrical reservoir. Proper care (topping off electrolyte levels with distilled water, making sure terminals aren’t corroded, can extend battery life to as much as five years and prevent a premature car battery replacement. Beware though, harsh climates can cut that figure in half.

Today, modern electronics incrementally drain a battery non-stop, even when your car is sitting in the garage; or if you’ve parked at the airport for a week. You have probably had that moment of anxiety when starting it up when you return. Vibration, wacky alternators delivering too much or too little of a charge, or plain old abusive behavior will lead to a premature car battery replacement as well.

What is CCA? A car battery is measured in “cold cranking amps.” This represents the electrical voltage that the battery can produce for 30 seconds at 0 degrees before the battery voltage drops below 7.2 volts. A typical car battery will have a CCA of 500. Batteries are available in many different sizes and CCA’s. Due to the many different makes and models of cars available today, when a car battery replacement is necessary, be careful to purchase the correct battery for your vehicle.

Be careful if you’re planning to handle a car battery. Precautionary measures are important as the electrolyte (water) inside the battery is a mixture of sulfuric acid and water. Sulfuric acid is very corrosive and harmful if it contacts skin or clothing. Batteries also emit hydrogen gas which is very flammable so it is extremely important to keep away from flames and sparks. If you are concerned at all about handling your battery, leave it to the pros.

Remember: A maintenance-free car battery requires periodic inspection and cleaning to ensure proper performance. Use your good common sense. Give your car battery a little TLC and it will serve for many years to come!
