Planning a summer road trip? Elk River has a few tips to get you started:
- Air Conditioning: Have your air conditioning inspected by a qualified technician.
- Antifreeze/Cooling system: The greatest cause of summer breakdowns is overheating. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked and flushed periodically.
- Oil: Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual (every 5,000 - 10,000 miles), more often if you make frequent short jaunts, extended trips with lots of luggage, or tow a trailer.
- Engine performance: Replace your car’s other filters (air, fuel, PCV, etc.) as recommended, and more often in dusty conditions. Vehicle problems are amplified by extremely cold or hot weather.
- Windshield Wipers: A dirty windshield causes eye fatigue and can pose a safety hazard. Replace worn blades and make sure you’re stocked with windshield washer solvent.
- Tires: Have your tires rotated every 5,000 to 10,000 miles (about every other oil change). Check tire pressure once a week while they're cold for the most accurate measurement. Remember to check the spare and be sure the jack is in good condition. Inspect tread life, uneven wear, and cupping. Check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. An alignment may be warranted if there's uneven tread wear or if your vehicle pulls to one side.
- Brakes: Brakes should be inspected as recommended in your manual, or sooner if you notice pulsations, grabbing noises, or longer stopping distances.
- Battery: Batteries can fail any time of the year so have it checked before any road trip.
If you want to have your vehicle in top shape for the summer season, don’t forget needed auto repair services. Using Elk River’s website and mobile app, you can access the maintenance schedule of all your cars, get a fair and transparent price, book an appointment with a qualified auto repair technician, make payments, access service history and receive maintenance reminders.
