The side of the road is a dangerous place to be on a good day, let alone a cold winter day. No matter whether you have a brand-new car, or an older model vehicle, there’s always the possibility that someday you'll find yourself with a flat tire, a broken radiator hose, …and the list goes on. Remember to be prepared and to stay calm until you can safely get to a close-by auto shop.
Here is Some 7 Safety Advice to Keep You and Your Family Safe on your Road trip:
- Keep your vehicle under control until you can stop. Don’t panic and don’t over-react.
- Get out of harm’s way to the shoulder as quickly and safely as possible.
- Try to get your vehicle to an auto shop if at all possible safely.
- Make sure you know the location of the hazard flashers and don’t forget to turn them on!
- Keep everyone inside the car unless there’s smoke, fire, or you can’t get your vehicle out of the flow of traffic.
- Call a nearby auto shop for towing or roadside assistance if the car absolutely will not run.
- Avoid leaving your vehicle to walk for help unless it is absolutely necessary. If you have to walk, stay on the left-hand shoulder facing traffic on a two-way highway. On a freeway or expressway, walk as far to the right as possible.
- Stay with your vehicle and wait for the auto shop’s tow truck to arrive and get you to an auto center for repairs. They may be able to repair your vehicle on-site and get you going again.
Tips to Remember: If you have car problems, stay calm and follow the above safety tips to ensure you arrive safely at your next destination.
