Car Tune Up: What will it cost?
Is it possible to estimate what the cost of a car tune up will be? This is the million dollar question many mechanics are asked! Unfortunately, it is a difficult task as there are many factors to take into consideration. When you are calling around trying to get a cost quote, make sure you are comparing apples to apples.
Ask the following 3 Questions to your preferred mechanic about car tune up service:
#1 – What parts are included in the tune-up?
Some auto shops add in the price of a fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, PCV filter, and distributor ignition rotor, plus all applicable labor charges. So of course, this quote is considerably higher than another shop that may only replace spark plugs as their "car tune-up package."
#2 – Does the quote include labor?
The cost of labor is another big factor to consider. Does the quote include the labor charges in addition to parts and supplies? Or, a particular brand dealer could be using a different guide to estimate labor and parts than a local independent shop. These guides could classify a car tune up differently, as well as recommend different replacement schedules for specific parts.
#3 – Are there other problems?
More importantly, make certain that your automobile actually needs a car tune-up. Newer vehicles are complex, full of computers and sensors that can cause your car to act strangely. Just because your vehicle runs poorly or differently than normal, does not necessarily mean a tune-up will fix the problem. In this case, before doling out the money for an unnecessary tune-up, ask your mechanic to run a diagnostic test to determine a potential problem.
