When something goes wrong with your vehicle's engine, it covers a lot of territories. Your vehicle is made up of many systems that all work together to make it run. However, there are some signs that indicate the start of engine problems--mainly strange sounds or smells. Listen to what your vehicle is telling you! These symptoms are the best way to find the source of problems so that you can treat your vehicle to the appropriate engine repair.
Observation is the Key to Receiving the Appropriate Engine Repair!
Because you know your vehicle, when you start to notice sounds or smell that is not normal, you will most likely know that trouble is pending. Don't wait too long before heading to your auto shop for help. These clues can be the key to proper troubleshooting. If you catch problems early enough you can avoid a lot of time and dollars spent on major engine repair!
Let your mechanic know if you have noticed any of the following problems:
- Misfiring or Surging -- The engine seems to start and accelerate initially just fine. However, as you continue driving down the road at a steady speed, the engine seems to "speed up" slightly or it seems to "miss and buck."
- Hesitation – As you accelerate, the response is delayed and sluggish, with a general lack of power. You may also hear a popping sound.
- Excessive Oil Consumption – Vehicle's that have received good engine service will usually not need to have oil added. However, as an engine age, you may start having to add a little oil on a regular basis. Don't worry about just a little bit, but if you're adding a quart or more of oil changes, it's time for the expert engine rebuild. The piston rings may simply need to be replaced, or it could be caused by leaking oil due to a bad gasket or cracked part. This can be an expensive engine rebuild.
Remember, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!" Regular engine service prevents major engine rebuild.
