Elk River Tire & Auto

Most people are ready for some warmer weather. Get your vehicle ready for the rising temperatures with a needed air conditioner service. During the frigid temperatures of winter, your heating unit received a lot of use. It may simply need fresh coolant added to the radiator to prevent an urgent air conditioner repair during the hot days of summer.

Air conditioning repair is a huge concern for drivers as it is often very expensive. With the introduction of computerized parts, today's A/C system has become more complex and the days of "do-it-yourself" vehicle maintenance is a thing of the past. Since the advent of the A/C system in the 1940's, scientific studies have proven the damaging effect of refrigerant to the ozone layer, and its production and use has been limited by law. There are stringent environmental regulations governing air conditioning service. As a result, auto mechanics are required to be certified, and auto shops must use specialized equipment to ensure that harmful chemicals are contained during an air conditioner service.

Basic Knowledge of the Car A/C system is Important So We Have Included a Brief Description Below of the A/C Components:

  • Compressor – a belt-driven pump that is fastened to the engine, responsible for compressing and transferring refrigerant gas.
  • Condenser – designed to radiate heat, usually located in front of the radiator. As hot compressed gases are introduced into the top of the condenser, it cools, condenses and exits the bottom of the condenser as a high-pressure liquid.
  • Evaporator – this is the heat absorption component which removes the heat and humidity from the inside of your vehicle.
  • Pressure Regulators – the most commonly used pressure regulator is the "orifice tube," located in the inlet tube of the evaporator. The "thermal expansion valve" is another type used on import and aftermarket systems. These regulators are designed to sense the temperature and pressure and regulate the refrigerant flow to the evaporator.
  • Metering Devices – There are two metering devices--the "receiver-drier" and the "accumulator." The type that is used depends on the type of pressure regulators used in your specific vehicle. The primary function of these components is to keep the gas and liquid separate, as well as remove moisture and debris.

Schedule an air conditioner service to make sure that all the parts and components of your A/C system are working properly before summer's heat arrives in full force.
