Car Service: How to Avoid Costly Car Repair
If you intend to keep your vehicle for a long time (you especially don't want to put out the big bucks for a new car), give it a little extra TLC on a daily and weekly basis to help avoid a costly car repair. It will help keep you out of the car service center and keep money in your pocket. It will also pay bigger dividends in the long-run in terms of maintaining your car's reliability and increased trade-in value.
Daily inspection:
Every day, just before you head off to work or school, give yourself a couple of extra minutes to take a quick walk around your car just to make sure everything looks okay. You will be able to notice if the tires have lost air, if there are any new dents or scratches, or whether there is a fluid leak. These issues could become serious problems if you keep driving your car without knowing about them.
Weekly inspection:
Just 10 minutes each week (maybe as part of your Saturday morning chores), Check the following:
- Tires, including the spare: Inflation, depth of tread, and general condition.
- Fluid levels: Check the oil, coolant, brake, windshield washer, and power steering fluids
- Lights: Visually check to make sure that all the lights are working--headlights, brake lights, turn indicators, backup lights, etc. Check the interior lights too.
- Windshield wiper blades: Don't let them keep squeaking or smearing your windshield.
- Bodywork: Inspect for any serious damage that may cause your vehicle to operate poorly or that may cause a driving hazard, such as dented fenders rubbing against the tires, keeping the brakes from working properly.
- Mirrors and windows: Check to make sure they are clean and free of any cracks or chips.
- Wash the vehicle – the finish of a clean car will last a lot longer than a dirty one!
In other words, if you take care of your car it will take care of you! These few DIY car service tips will let you know when you need a professional car repair, giving you peace of mind knowing you have a reliable vehicle when you need it.
