Wondering What are the Signs of a Bad Tire?
How many of us take off in our cars without thinking about the condition of our tires? All of a sudden, you find yourself limping down the road with an unexpected flat tire, looking for an urgent tire repair in a strange town. Worse yet, the chances of an accident increase if you continue to keep driving with bad tires. It is crucial to keep up with regular tire rotations, checking the inflation pressure, wheel alignment, tire balancing, and checking the tread wear.
If you are wondering what are the signs of a bad tire, take a look below:
- Extra noisy tires – Humming or thumping sounds (the greater the speed, the louder the noise) may be caused by tread that is unevenly worn.
- Wobbling or bouncing – Usually only felt at low speeds, a bubble in the rubber caused by the separation of the internal belts that allows the pressurized air to push against the tread.
- Low tread depth – If the tread depth falls below 2/32”, it is time to replace your tires.
- Poor traction – As the tread wears down, the tire is unable to sufficiently grip the road, especially in wet conditions. The slightest movement in steering or an unexpected bump in the road can result in sliding.
- Defective tire – A tire that cannot be balanced may vibrate constantly.
It is important to take action if you notice any of the problems above while driving. First, lower your speed. If you can safely do so, pull off the road. Then, if you are able (or call for roadside assistance) replace the damaged tire with the spare. If you start driving and the problem still persists, it would be wise to call a tow truck to the nearest auto shop.
A word of advice: A tire repair only lasts so long before it gives out. So that you can continue to drive as safely as possible, it is time to purchase a new set of tires!
