Elk River Tire & Auto

If your vehicle is starting to show signs of performance problems, your auto mechanic can give you some sound advice on what can be done to restore its power and reliability. The best advice you will hear is that you should make sure to take care of all engine service items as recommended in your owner’s manual.

What are the signs of engine failure? Here are eight common signs to watch out for:

  1. Check Engine light -- When this little warning light comes on, if at all possible, head to your auto shop. Your mechanic can run a diagnostic test to pinpoint what is going on.
  2. Loss of Power -- There could be a glitch in the combustion process, which converts gasoline into the power needed to make your vehicle go.
  3. Decreased Fuel Economy -- There could be an issue in the compression stroke of the engine.
  4. Noisy Engine -- An abnormality in the combustion flow will cause knocking, backfiring, hissing, spitting and popping sounds during the ignition process.
  5. Stalling -- The intake stroke is not receiving the right spark or air/fuel mixture.
  6. Noxious Odor -- If the exhaust stroke of your internal combustion engine is starting to fail, noxious odors can come from the exhaust system.
  7. Engine Won’t Turn Off -- A problem usually found in high-performance vehicles, it usually happens when the octane in the gas is incorrect, a solenoid is failing, or the carburetor needs an adjustment.
  8. Engine Run Rough -- This is commonly caused by clogs in the system, old spark plugs, an incorrect octane level, or a low battery.

Remember: To keep your vehicle running strong and prevent unexpected and costly engine repairs, don’t forget regular engine service!
