Elk River Tire & Auto

In its most basic form, a wheel alignment consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are perpendicular to the ground and parallel to each other.  The purpose of this adjustment is to maximum tire life and to keep your vehicle moving straight and true when driving along a straight and level road.

Wheel alignment is often confused with wheel balancing.  The two really have nothing to do with each other except for the fact that they affect ride and handling.  If a wheel is out of balance, it will cause a vibration at highway speeds that can be felt in the steering wheel and/or the seat.  If the car alignment is out, it can cause excessive tire wear, and steering or tracking problems.

Every Driver Should Know Basic of Wheel Alignment!

  1. A proper wheel alignment should always start and end with a test drive.
  2. The front end and steering linkage should be checked for wear before performing a car alignment.
  3. The tires should all be in good shape with even wear patterns.  If you have a tire with excessive camber wear, for instance, and you correct the car alignment problem that caused that wear, the tire will make partial contact with the road.
  4. Pulling problems are not always related to wheel alignment.  Problems with tires (especially unequal air pressure), brakes and power steering can also be responsible. It is up to a good car alignment technician to determine the cause.

Tips to Remember: The informed driver will understand the above technicalities of wheel alignment, be able to recognize a problem and take their vehicle to an auto service center for inspection and possible repair.
