Elk River Tire & Auto

If you pay attention to the quality of your car's exhaust system you can get an idea of what's going on inside the engine. As the engine burns fuel and creates exhaust, lots of different things are happening. Unfortunately, some of these things aren't supposed to happen. Things like burning oil, evaporating coolant and leaving unburned fuel in the exhaust -- these are not good to see. Pay attention to what's coming out of the muffler and you can get a good idea as to what problems your engine may be having, often before the problem gets worse, saving you money in the long run. The problem might just be a worn out muffler, but you will never know until you have your car checked.

Here’s a List of the Most Common Signs to Help you Troubleshoot your Vehicle’s Exhaust System by Noticing the Color and Smell of the Emissions From Muffler.

  1. Blue or Gray Smoke: You notice gray smoke (or a bluish tint) coming from the muffler when you start the motor. The smoke may or may not disappear after the car is warmed, but it is just less noticeable.
  2. White Smoke or Water Vapor: You notice white smoke coming from the muffler when you start the motor. If it is cold out, this may be normal. If the smoke does not disappear after the car is warmed, you have a problem.
  3. Black Smoke: You notice black smoke coming from the muffler when you start the motor. The smoke may or may not disappear after the car is warmed. An engine may be running rough or misfiring.
  4. Fuel Odor or Drop in MPG: You notice that your fuel efficiency (miles per gallon) has decreased significantly, and/or you notice a strong smell like rotten eggs coming from the exhaust. You may also notice that your vehicle doesn't have the same amount of power it used to.

If you are noticing any of the signs above in your vehicle’s exhaust system, you would be wise to have it checked out by a certified auto mechanic as soon as possible. A little prevention now will save a bigger, more costly muffler repair down the road.
