Elk River Tire & Auto

Some vehicle owners don’t know whether their vehicle needs a wheel alignment or a simple balancing.  Both of these adjustments affect the ride and handling of your vehicle, although they are two completely different things. A wheel alignment consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are perpendicular to the ground and parallel to each other. If a wheel is just out of balance, you will likely only feel a vibration in the steering wheel and/or the seat at highway speeds.

A correct car alignment will help minimize excessive wear and tear on your tires, saving you money in the long run with longer-lasting tires.  A vehicle should also track straight and true on a level road unless there are other issues causing steering problems.  Ask your car alignment technician what is included in their alignment service.

What Does ASE Certified Wheel Alignment include?

  • A test drive at the start and end of each service,
  • Checking the front end and steering linkage for excessive wear,
  • Checking the tires for excessive camber wear (caused by the tires making only partial contact with the road). All four tires should have even wear patterns.
  • Checking any other components that could cause steering problems, such as poor tires, failing brakes, or faulty power steering.

A word to the wise: If a driver knows their vehicle very well, it should be fairly easy to recognize a wheel alignment problem.  If you are experiencing steering problems, schedule an inspection and repair with a car alignment technician as soon as possible to prevent further possible damage to other components of your vehicle.
