Time for a Transmission Fluid Change?
Regular vehicle maintenance should include a transmission fluid change, just like replacing the coolant in your radiator or having a basic oil change. Regular transmission service, typically every 24,000 miles or at least every two years, can help you avoid a more extensive and costly transmission repair down the road. Even though some vehicle manufacturers may recommend longer service intervals (between 50,000-100,000 miles), these longer intervals are a disadvantage. Minor problems may not be identified early on and can turn into a major transmission repair.
Types of Transmission Repair:
- Transmission Fluid Change -- A typically replaces about one-third to one-half of the fluid and is generally adequate for a motor that is regularly maintained.
- Transmission Flush -- The condition of the fluid will determine whether a transmission fluid change will do the job, or whether a more extensive transmission flush is necessary. A flush is intended to replace nearly 100% of the fluid. It requires a specialized machine that pumps new fluid through the transmission's lube and cooler circuit, replacing the old fluid.
- Replacing the Filter -- If the filter is accessible, it should be replaced.
- Resealing -- Your automatic may develop a leak but will operate fine in all other aspects. In this case, your mechanic will probably recommend a reseal service. This form of transmission repair involves several steps:
- Removing the automatic transmission;
- Replacing the external seals (usually requires partial disassembly of the transmission);
- Check out the condition of other internal components for pending problems;
- Replace old fluid with clean fresh fluid;
- Reinstalling the transmission back into the car.
Following any type of transmission repair, whether it's revealing or a transmission fluid change, your auto mechanic should road-test your vehicle to make any necessary adjustments and to ensure the transmission is performing properly.
