Elk River Tire & Auto

With spring at our doorstep, it’s time to do a little vehicle spring cleaning--starting with oil changes. Many auto shops and express oil change shops offer oil change coupons to make regular oil changes affordable. Even though oil changes are fairly basic, they are one of the most important parts of good vehicle maintenance.

Take a few minutes to read the facts below. Becoming an informed consumer can make the difference of trusting your mechanic, or having to take care of your vehicle yourself because you don’t know who to trust.

  1. Recycled vs. new> -- Today’s recycling uses the same refining process as for crude refining, yielding a high-quality base oil. Most name-brands use the highest quality recycled oil with an advanced formula for performance that exceeds industry standards.
  2. Conventional> -- Conventional oil use natural crude products extracted from the earth which go through a refining process to produce a final product.
  3. Additives can be both good and bad> – Special additives can be good for certain vehicles in regard to seal leaks and oil consumption. However, some can be harmful to the engine if used improperly or at the wrong time.
  4. All brands are not the same> – Different companies use different additives. That is what makes each product different from another.
  5. Synthetics are not “fake”> -- Synthetics are derived from crude. However, synthetic uses higher base stocks than conventional. Synthetic also goes through a different process than conventional for extra wear protection and overall higher shear strengths. Synthetic oil will not cause damage to engine seals.
  6. Dark colored oil doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time for an oil change – If the oil is dark, it means that it is using the detergents added to the formula to clean the inside of the engine.
  7. Change each oil Filter – It is recommended that the filter is changed at each oil change to eliminate any risk of contaminants trapped by the filter remaining in the system.
  8. Hard driving can be both long or short trips – “Hard” driving actually pertains to high and/or constant changing of rpms, pulling or towing.
  9. Oil weakens with time – Oil not only gets dirty, but any additives will weaken it as the engine uses it up.
  10. Conventional, synthetic blend, synthetic, and high mileage oils are compatible -- Mixing or switching between types is not harmful to your engine.

Important Tips to Remember About Oil Changes: Just a few dollars and a few minutes every 90 days or 3,000 miles will keep your vehicle driving smoothly down the road.
