Elk River Tire & Auto

Is your vehicle losing power when trying to accelerate? Is the engine stalling or idling rough when you stop for red lights? Does the “check engine” light keep flashing? If you are experiencing these problems or more, schedule a visit to your auto shop and discuss with your trusted mechanic the engine repair options that will restore performance to your vehicle. You could be facing an engine rebuild or engine replacement.

The question you may need to answer first is whether or not you have been having the engine service items taken care of as recommended in your vehicle’s service manual, such as inspecting and replacing fluids, filters, and hoses.

So what are the causes of engine failure? There are three main causes to be aware of:

  • Lack of Lubrication: The engine is not getting the oil that it needs to keep the moving parts lubricated. This could be caused by a faulty oil pump, or not changing the oil and filter as recommended.
  • Overheating: A coolant leak (from the radiator, hoses, or engine) allows the engine to overheat, causing engine failure. Or there could be a bad water pump, a faulty electric cooling fan, or a bad thermostat.
  • Detonation: Abnormal combustion inside the engine produces excessive heat and pressure in the combustion chamber, resulting in engine failure. Poor ignition timing, bad spark plugs, low octane fuel, or a hot engine can also cause detonation. Take care of these problems as soon as possible to prevent major damage to the engine.

Talk to your engine repair technician about how to avoid the problems listed above. Be smart and keep up with the recommended schedule for engine service! It’s worth the cost!
